Yes I Can
El Centro de la Raza | Seattle, WA
The traditional greeting that is passed between warriors of the African Masai tribe is "Kasserian Ingera", which translates as: "And how are the children?" Even warriors with no children will give the traditional response: "All the children are well". El Centro de la Raza is a civil rights organization in Seattle that captures this deep sentiment for the wellbeing of the children in their community.
Originally started in 1972 when community members peacefully squatted in an abandoned elementary school until they gained legal possession, El Centro de la Raza literally translates into "The Center of the People." It is a community center aimed to serve people of all races under a common purpose: the hope for a better life.
They offer a wide variety of services including ESL classes, a food bank, citizenship courses, job training, financial education, housing and home ownership programs, and perinatal support.
Perhaps even more uniquely, El Centro is deeply committed to preparing their children to have a powerful role in the world. Their child care program focuses on building self-awareness, self-esteem, and cultural pride. Every morning the children begin by singing a song: "Si, se puede / Yes, I can."
If you stop by, try and say hello to Executive Director Roberto Maestas -- a deeply inspiring man who is just as at home singing to children as leading a social ovement. "This is your home also," he says. "You are always welcome here."
